In 2022, I began a new approach to making sculpture that I’ve collectively titled, Prompts: A series of short stories.
These wall-mounted sculptures pair a photographic image with a ceramic object positioned on a wooden platform. My intentions are to create scenarios that isolate an ceramic object (character) in a moment and site, creating an encounter that is enhanced by the sculpture’s suspension on the wall.
Like a vignette or diorama, the ceramic character is positioned frontstage and the printed image saturates the backstage. A liminal space is implied by the proximity of their coexistence in different dimensions. Color and texture insinuate sensory and atmospheric conditions. My allusions to figurative sculpture, still life paintings, and architecture are catalytic ingredients for composition and content.
Though individual titles offer subtle clues, the underlying meanings are intentionally vague. Observation and curiosity draw me into the fog of the indefinable mysteries that shroud my creative core. Consistencies and proclivities seem to find alternative routes to indulge materials, processes, and conceptual whimsies.
